If Viktor Hovland finishes on top of the leaderboard this week at the 2024 BMW Championship, he’ll become just the second golfer to successfully win this event in back-to-back years, joining Patrick Cantlay (2021-22). Hovland will have to stave off several serious contenders if he wants to rewrite the history books. Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jason Day are among the experienced players looking to dethrone Hovland and win the BMW Championship 2024, which is the second of three events in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Play gets underway from Castle Pines Golf Club on Thursday, Aug. 22. Scheffler, the No. 1 ranked player in the world, enters this week’s event as the +320 favorite according to the latest 2024 BMW Championship odds. He’s followed by Schauffele (+650), McIlroy (+1000) and Collin Morikawa (+1200) on the PGA odds board. Hovland, Ludvig Aberg and Hideki Matsuyama are all going off at +1800. Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters — its third Masters in a row — and this year’s PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now with the BMW Championship 2024 field set, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2024 BMW Championship golf predictions
One surprise: McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the top favorites, does not crack the top five this week. McIlroy struggled at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, finishing T-68, which resulted in him falling to fifth in the FedEx Cup standings. Couple that with missing the cut at the Open Championship, the final round blunders of the U.S. Open may be haunting McIlroy to close the summer.
McIlroy has only won one of his previous 13 BMW Championship appearances, which came way back in 2012. He’s put together three top-five performances over his last eight BMW Championship tournaments, but he’s never finished inside the top three since that 2012 victory. Driving distance has never been an issue for McIlroy and he ranks second in driving distance this year, but he’s just 83rd in driving accuracy. Putting has been his biggest issue this year, as he ranks outside the top 40 in total putting and putting average while ranking 70th in strokes gained: putting. McIlroy is always a popular bet due to his name appeal and the model doesn’t project value in him at his current price.
The model has also examined where Schauffele finishes. Schauffele has been on an absolute tear in the second half of the 2024 PGA Tour season. He won his first two majors of his career at the PGA Championship and Open Championship and is coming off a T-3 showing at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship.
The 30-year-old has finished T-15 or better in each of his last eight starts on the PGA Tour, racking up two wins and six top-10 finishes during that stretch. He’s been able to secure those positive results thanks to his stellar iron play. Schauffele is currently ranked fourth in strokes gained: approach to green (0.812) and 14th in greens in regulation percentage (70.07%). He’s also ranked sixth in strokes gained: putting (0.617) and eighth in putting average (1.718), so he’ll be confident he can be in contention again this week.
